Hailing from the Sint-Niklaas, Walfang is a noise collective that defies genre constraints, creating a unique sonic identity within Belgium’s bustling alternative music scene.
A unique blend of noise rock, post-punk, and experimental grunge, Walfang’s music invites an exploration of the human condition, delving into themes of apathy, self-destruction, and existential dread, while also offering glimpses of hope and harmony.
Formed with a “post-everything” ethos, the 4 members of Walfang continually push the limits of musical expression, embracing a fluid approach where no style is off-limits. Each member brings diverse influences, resulting in an evolving sound that reflects the band’s dedication to artistic exploration.
The band’s unconventional approach extends to their self-produced music videos and artwork, which capture their creative vision with a blend of quirkiness and depth, defying norms of the alternative scene.
With their brand new album, Trigger The Short-Fused (set for release on November 8, 2024 through Barley Records), delves even deeper into their already thought provoking, dark musical territory, with singles “No Season”, “Probably Sand” & “Soaring” setting the tone for a record that tackles subjects of existential uncertainty, depression futility, but also glimpses of hope.
Recorded at Gam studios with longtime friend & engineer Joren Knieper, “Trigger The Short-Fused” embodies the band’s ability to balance introspection with energy, extrospection with melancholy.
During the recording sessions, the band went through personal trials that would normally destroy most acts, but the band stood resilient and channeled their adversity into 9 tracks of stunning variety. Drummer Charlie Buyse recounts: “I was on crutches, with infected ankles and knees, unable to walk, from January until the first day of recording the album at the end of February. On the one hand it gave rise to even more anxiety than usual but an enormous amount of ambition on the other.”
By all accounts, experiences like these are rife throughout the creation of this record, which certainly added a palpable tension and urgency to the music, enriching the album’s eclectic texture.
More than just a band, Walfang is a collective that remains a constant force in the Belgian alternative music scene. With an uncompromising drive to push boundaries and an ever-evolving sound that is clear for all to hear on “Trigger The Short-Fused” – they continue to make an indelible mark, inviting listeners to journey through the catharsis and chaos of modern life.
